
TENTATIVE SCHEDULE
A preliminary look at the 2027 Mars events around the globe
February 2027 ● Observing Mars around the world, with astronomers and artists. Juvisy, Flagstaff, and Takapo (New Zealand)–sketching Mars through telescopes at the opposition. Hemispheres of Mars: Northern vs. Southern (separated by the Great Crustal Dichotomy), Western vs. Eastern on Earth, and Right vs. Left Hemisphere of the Brain.
Late April 2027 ● Societe Astronomique de France/Society for the History of Astronomy event at Cambridge, UK (likely venue–needs to be confirmed). Will include discussions of Nathaniel Green and Schiparelli’s Right and Left Hemisphere views of Mars in 1877.
Early May 2027 ● The Road to Mars Began in Savigliano. Collaboration will likely include Brera and (possibly) Palermo and Rome (regarding Secchi, Schiaparelli’s mentor, who was the first person to make color drawings of Mars). Will include art and music about Mars. Andrea, Paolo, Sarah, Guy, Bill (and possibly Ileana Chinicchi)
August 2027 ● Celebration of the 150th anniversary of Asaph Hall’s discovery of the satellites of Mars at the US Naval Observatory in Washington, DC.
October 2027● Mars in Science Fiction, Pseudoscience, and Reality. A discussion involving science fiction writers and futurists and scientists to discuss what we are learning about Mars now–and where we go from here.
